Hi Donovan, welcome to the forum. Please use correct grammar and punctuation in your posts for our English learners (fixed your title). - StuartSD, Feb 15, 2012
Sorry Stuart, but doesn't your comment imply that Donovan's post is for the English learners? And I am sure the part in brackets should read 'I have fixed (edited would be better here) your title - MaryMcc, Feb 15, 2012
Not all people here speak English as their native language, so I wonder if it is reasonable/realistic to ask people to post in "correct" English all the time. - JazSpanish, Feb 15, 2012

Since there are more than one words in Spanish for this simple word in English, a simple search from the translator may not answer this question.

I don't know the complete answer either, but I have seen both "pelo" and cabello" used to refer to "hair on the head." "Pelo" seems to be used more often, in casual situations, such as "you have nice hair (a compliment to a woman)."

Maybe it has some regional difference as well? I do hope some experienced or native Spanish speakers can help answer this question, as "hair" is such a common word in daily usage.

Tienes razón, Jasmine, casi siempre utilizamos "pelo" en situaciones cotidianas: "Tienes un pelo muy bonito", "Tengo que ir a cortarme el pelo", "Me gusta el color de tu pelo"... - Cordobesa, Feb 16, 2012
"Cabello" se utiliza en casos más concreto, por ejemplo, en anuncios ("La nueva marca para el cuidado de su cabello") o en artículos de revistas ("Consejos para mantener sano tu cabello"). - Cordobesa, Feb 16, 2012
Gracias Cordobesa. Very helpful explanation. - JazSpanish, Feb 20, 2012

Hi Donovan. We have a great translator/dictionary super-search box (upper right side of your screen with the magnifying glass) that can answer these types of questions for you (you can also click the "Translate" tab above). For hair on your head you say, "cabello". For other types of hair, we use "el pelo" as Chun suggested. Check out the full hair in Spanish dictionary entry for more information. Welcome to the forum!
