Any success stories? ...from individuals learning spanish from at-home, learn online resources??
In reader's opinion/experience, is it more likely to gain a working knowledge of the language by taking a formal college course, or are online resources and learn-at-your-own-pace, self-instruction enough to effectively be able to communicate with native speakers with confidence? ...aside from "My name is", and "Where is the hotel?"

I was sent by my employer to work in Spain for 5 months in 2000. I didn´t know a word of Spanish. I got a set of Lingophone tapes specifically designed for business travellers out of the library, this was 12 years ago, so there was no internet service. I learned the basics from those in a week and, yes, it was simple stuff, but it allowed me to communicate and that was a most important start. It opened the door. It enabled me to chat about family, house, work etc. I have never had a formal lesson and have no affinity for language but I learned by being immersed in the language. I am using this site as revision to back up my Spanish now I don´t need to use it. This site is very good for learning because it relies on repetition. You won´t get that in a formal class and if, like me, you are bad at languages, you may struggle in a class. ¡Buena suerte!
