Proofreading the Spanish Grammar Topics and Quizzes

There is a small but growing contingent of people who are willing to help proofread the Spanish Grammar and Quiz section. This is wonderful news because this section is an invaluable resource. It represents a lot of hard work on the part of the dedicated people who have written and compiled it, and it is an excellent adjunct to Paralee’s videos.

Rumor has it that the quizzes are “full” of errors. Some people have expressed reluctance to take them for fear of becoming confused, frustrated or misled. So far I have not found them to be “chock-full” of errors, but there definitely are some.

I’ve started at the beginning and compiled a list of errors that I could identify. Meanwhile, someone (I don’t know who) has been very busy, quietly compiling a list of over 50 errors and sending it to the editors. Whoever you are.... Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am grateful to hear of it, but not surprised. That’s the spirit of co-operation that I’ve come to expect from the wonderful community on SpanishDict!

MLucie made the excellent suggestion that we start a thread so we can report which Topics have been covered, which are currently under review, and which have yet to be corrected. This is a MUST if we are to avoid wasting time going over material that has already been corrected.

The editor has asked that we compile a list for her containing the following information:

-The URL of the topic, for instance: http://beta.spanishdict.com/topics/practice/19

-The quiz question: Mis exámenes son (difícil).

-The problem: The answer (dificiles) lacks the accent in the second syllable (difíciles).

IF YOU FIND AN ERROR IN THE SPANISH GRAMMAR AND QUIZ SECTION, PLEASE LET US KNOW ON THIS THREAD!!
-You can check the thread to see if it has already been reported.
-If not, please post your find and I will send it along to the editor in the form of a list.
-If you elect to send it to feedback yourself, please put it in the above format for the editors and let us know by posting here that you have flagged that error.
Thank you all!!

Update - Topics 1 - 7: Descriptive Adjectives through Cardinal Numbers (101+) have been checked for simple errors and these have been corrected. smile They have not yet been checked by a native speaker (required!) for accuracy. If you find any further errors here or elsewhere, please post them. Thanks!

Wow! Thank you, Cogu! :-) - MLucie, Feb 2, 2012
Don't say thank you, MLucie. Obviously, this is only an example. There are countless mistakes in every lesson and their quizzes. Just to point out that this work has to be done by a native speaker. - cogumela, Feb 2, 2012
This thead is a really nice idea, but I'm afraid that there is too much work to do on the site. - cogumela, Feb 2, 2012
I mean... it's not a few typos. There are tons of serious errors on the learning matherial. Whoever created them is not fluent, not even advanced. - cogumela, Feb 2, 2012
What are you saying, Cogu... that it's impossible? That it shouldn't even be attempted? - ajaks, Feb 2, 2012
Well, Cogu! A huge thank you for the corrections, for the new information, for making your point.... and congratulations on passing the quiz LoL :) - ajaks, Feb 2, 2012

Ajaks:

What are you saying, Cogu... that it's impossible? That it shouldn't even be attempted?

No, I'm not saying that, ajaks. I praise and deeply respect this attempt.

But there are about 120 lessons in there, each one with its quizz. And you can find mistakes anywhere you look (I was not looking for mistakes, I just joined SpanishDict and took a test!)

What I'm saying is that this is not a work for the users. Especially taking into account the rate at which bugs are being corrected in the site after being reported to feedback. This work should be done by the paid native staff of SD for the sake of us all, but above all of yours, learners of Spanish.

Ah, now there you go.... I didn't know there was "paid, native staff." That is to say, I assumed there was paid staff of some description, but I didn't know there was paid staff, who are also native speakers... (continued) - ajaks, Feb 2, 2012
... who are also competent to do this work. It seemed to me that everything on this site is written by "members." - ajaks, Feb 2, 2012

Topic 2 - Adjective Placement

This list has been sent to feedback (with more explanation than appears here). Please post any other errors you have found.

Adjective Placement Exceptions
1. #2 > bulleted list, second sentence “Yo tengo...”
2. #3 > bulleted list, third sentence “árbol” (needs accent)
3. Consider mentioning "buena/mal suerte" as an example of phrases where adjective precedes noun

The Quiz
1. simple > “simple case” to “simple casa.”
2. mis hermanas > "hermanos” should be “hermanas.”
3. días muchos > change “días muchas" to "días muchos"

This is a list on Topic 1 - Adjectives.... It has been sent to feedback (with more explanation than appears here). There may be more but these are the ones I have found.

Topic 1 - Adjectives: Descriptive Adjectives (regular & irregular)

Adjectives that end in -o
1. Bulleted list, third from top: Yo soy delgado.
2. Bulleted list, fourth from top: Nosotros somos delgados.
3. Fourth bulleted list – next to last example Pablo es un cabezón.
4. Next sentence – Paula es una cabezona.

The Quiz
1. dificiles > difíciles (with an accent mark)
2. raro > “Ví unos pájaros (with an accent mark)......”
3. rubio > “Tengo los cabello rubio.”

difíciles should have an accent vi shouldn't, pájaros should (need to make error clear) - 0074b507, Feb 1, 2012
adjectives..I understand the error with cabezón, cabezona (the un makes it a noun, not an adjective), but what is wrong with delgado(s) Ser can be used with adjectives.? - 0074b507, Feb 1, 2012
of course quen, take me for example. soy maravillosa, delgada, rubia, deportiva...hey, you will be in the dunce corner for life...::.sigh::: - 00494d19, Feb 1, 2012
Oh, I see. You don't like Nosotras somos delgadas. Yo soy delgada. Why? She is starting with the single, masculine adjective ending in "o", then showing how to make the feminine and plural. - 0074b507, Feb 1, 2012
Q: Thanks for flagging the accent in "vi". I cut some of the explanation from this before posting (just to save space). The problem with "Yo soy..." and "Nosotras...." is the use of the subject pronoun, particularly with "Yo". - ajaks, Feb 1, 2012
Thanks ajaks, these has been fixed! Keep sending them. - martha-sd, Feb 1, 2012
Great! Thanks Martha. - ajaks, Feb 1, 2012
Just a small typo martha: have* been fixed :) - 00b6f46c, Feb 1, 2012

I thought it was not possible to make these corrections by a normal member, you need a native speaker to revise all quizzes, as you can see by cogu's post, there are not just a few typos.

Hi Heidita. Thanks for the link - I had not seen that page before. Believe me, I don't disagree with you! We need a proficient native speaker to go through every single quiz and edit for Spanish syntax and grammar - the kind of errors that folks like myself cannot correct. Obviously, I am in no way competent to flag those kinds of errors - maybe in ten years or so I could, or maybe never. Of course, ten years from now this controversy may still be going on and I'll probably be only about halfway through the quizzes wink

Perhaps the misunderstanding arose because I thought all this work would have to be done by volunteers. On the old site I noticed that, at the bottom of each reference page there were corrections suggested by rank & file members. Given this precedent, I just wanted to "get the ball rolling."

On the other hand, if you're talking about one person - a native speaker - who will take charge of this task and take responsibility for its completion, I say "Terrific! Let's do that." I'd be happy to bow out or help out - whatever the boss says to do! So, I guess my question is.... Do you think that will happen?

I think it is best if you talk with martha about this, as she is the one in charge, thanks ajaks:) - 00494d19, Feb 3, 2012
I will try Heidita! Thank you for all your guidance. I know you are always looking out for everyone's interests and I never ever thought you were being mean!!! :) - ajaks, Feb 3, 2012

HI ajaks, the reference articles were written by Paralee (staff member) a lot were written by Lazarus and some more members, like myself . The new quizzes on the site were written and posted by Paralee.

There are staff members on the site, of course, I know that native or fluent speakers are Martha and Stuart, who is new to the staff.

I did not mean to be mean when I closed the thread, I thought it was not possible to make these corrections by a normal member, you need a native speaker to revise all quizzes, as you can see by cogu's post, there are not just a few typos.

I think your attempt has been a very nice try, but I still think this is not possible. This is just an opinion, of course.

Please read about staff members and mods here.

(this has not been updated, izanoni and yeser007 are also moderators, whereas Carlos is not any more)

well, scroll down to the bottom of the page, you have a lot of useful links there. - 00494d19, Feb 3, 2012
Of course! It's inside the "About" link.... ¡muchas gracias! You know, I think SpanishDict's People should have a more prominent place at the top :) - ajaks, Feb 3, 2012

MLucie said: I didn't realize, until I started making corrections on one of them for myself, that it is not a simple matter. The one lesson that I was working on would take hours to go through, note the errors and then format the list in a comprehensible way.

Yes, Lucie, unfortunately this is the case, which is probably why no one has tackled this project yet. But just think of how much time it took to write these pages/quizzes! They are the best, most comprehensive practice that I've found online. That's why I'm so anxious to have them perfected. I could just buy more workbooks, but who's to say they are any more accurate? The Spanish textbook used by our class is loaded with errors. I'd rather invest in SD - with people I know and trust - and where I can ask questions and make suggestions!

As far as proofreading goes.... all I (personally) can do is this: I can flag errors in English sentences. I can find simple and obvious Spanish errors such as missing accents and misspellings. I can compile lists for the editors in a format that is easy for them to work with. I can save time for the native speaker(s), - who I assumed would be volunteer(s) - if and when they ever get around to this task.

Just one example: When going through the quiz on Cardinal Numbers (1-100) I noticed two repeats. Not a big deal, but with 100 numerals to learn and only 40 questions, why have repeats? So I went through the quiz again and copied down each numeral in MSWord and did a search for each one. I found five repeats all told! Then I double-checked my work. This kind of work is simple and tedious and would be a waste of valuable time for a native speaker!

Speaking only for myself, that's the sort of thing I am aiming for here, as a beginner and a non-speaker.

I'm not a native but I can recognize simple mistakes....

I said that in the earlier thread...I wish it were that simple!

Cogumela's example of the work it is going to take to go through these lessons is very accurate. I didn't realize, until I started making corrections on one of them for myself, that it is not a simple matter. The one lesson that I was working on would take hours to go through, note the errors and then format the list in a comprehensible way. I have multiple pages of corrections for one quiz--and they would still have to be checked by a native speaker.

I'm a fan of the idea, and grateful to the people who have worked to make these quizzes possible. For me, the errors aren't a huge problem...I just say "Well, that is clearly wrong..." and go on. Things like "Aquí es el regalo" aren't going to ruin my Spanish, but they do reflect badly on SpanishDict and could easily mislead beginners.

So, I'm saying it now...Heidita was right. Proven by Cogumela and my own attempt. This is not going to be an easy project and will have to be left to the staff.

Insert sigh of disappointment here.
