Afrontar

to face, to confront

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted January 30, 2012.

If you have ideas for good words, please send me a PM – I will make it a future word of the day.

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

My Example:

Comenzaré a afrontar todos mis problemas ahora mismo. No, tal vez debería esperar hasta mañana, o aún mejor, el día siguiente.

I will start to face up to all my problems right now. No, maybe I should wait until tomorrow, or better yet, the next day.

Tengo que afrontar a mi jefe con la mala noticia que me voy. Pero le voy a tener que decírsela pronto.

I have to face my boss with the bad news that I am leaving. But I am going to have to tell it to him soon.

Fun with indirect and direct object pronouns. :) - Tosh, Dec 31, 2011
pues, buena suerte en tu nuevo puesto... - 001a2987, Dec 31, 2011
...a mi jefe...Pero voy a tener que...(you don't need "le") - drvicente, Dec 31, 2011
I hope you get more money in your new job! - 00a4c226, Dec 31, 2011
@drvicente - the dreaded personal "a". And I thought I needed "le" because of the "se", but the "le" is only needed when there is a indirect object, not another indirect object pronoun, right? :) - Tosh, Dec 31, 2011
@coffee - some, yes ;). And I didn't quit, really... just thought it would be chévere for the word of the day. - Tosh, Dec 31, 2011
Yes Tosh..you are very right..in your second sentence."tengo que decirsela"..I have to tell him it..you never say "lela" in Spanish and you correctly changed "le" to "se" that's why you didn't need that other "le." Mission accomplished with "se" - drvicente, Jan 1, 2012
Thanks again! I was trying to be overly "indirect". ;) - Tosh, Jan 1, 2012

I try not to be afraid when I face difficulties, but I am. Then I do my best to gather all my courage and be strong.

Is "hacer todo lo que poder?" the right version in Spanish?

Afrontó a su profesora en clase? Si, la afronté en clase y recibí una nota màs baja.

¿Did you confront your teacher in class? Yes, I confronted her in class and received a lower grade.

Las correciónes son bienvenidas. (Corrections are welcome).

Muy bien, Maria..you are correct you need the personal "a" after profesora. The only correction I have is you forgot your inverted question mark at the beginning of your sentence. - drvicente, Jan 1, 2012
drvicente, you mean you need the personal "a" after the verb, don't you? you wrote after profesora, you don't mean that, do you? - Maria-Russell, Jan 1, 2012
How about Yes, I confronted her, does that need a personal "a"? if so, where? Isn't her a person? - Maria-Russell, Jan 1, 2012
No, I didn't Maria after the verb and before the direct object...sorry for the confusion! - drvicente, Jan 1, 2012
No, I confronted the teacher= Afronté a la profesora but I confronted her= La afronté..La is the direct object and comes before the verb...no "a" needed. - drvicente, Jan 1, 2012
Thanks IndianaChris and drvicente. - Maria-Russell, Jan 2, 2012

Real valor consists not in being insensible to danger; but in a hurry to confront and disarm it.

El verdadero valor no consiste en ser insensible al peligro; sino en apresurarse a confrontarlo y desarmarlo.

buen foto. ~wow~ dos de él. ¿mi6mi6, entiendes la corrección abajo? you used subjunctive verb, and i think required command form (imperative). - machamaria, Dec 31, 2011
@ machamaria....I don't quite understand, I'll correct the sentence like drvincente did but if you like you may inform me ofcourse why I have to use another tense. It was meant as a subjunctive (that's what I'm learning right now) - 00434ec3, Jan 1, 2012
@drvicente Thank you for correcting my errors. - 00434ec3, Jan 1, 2012
Your welcome Mi6..Actually you need the imperative or command form... - drvicente, Jan 1, 2012
