Question about "que"

Can que really be translated literally in English? It seems to me like it's used pretty differently en Español, and honestly, I find it pretty confusing when trying to say or read certain things en Español.

Often it's use is quite similar to English as a

relative pronoun - that:

The girl 'that' is here. La chica 'que' está aquí.

  • the difference is that in English we sometimes drop the 'that' but in Spanish you never can.

The other main use is when 'que' is

used with prepositions where it usually translates to 'which' - eg:

a que - to which

con que - with which

de que - of which, about which

en que - in which, at which

MC, your first example should be "Creo que eso es lindo." 2nd - since it really should be "who is here," mention of "que" meaning "who" as well would be helpful - 005faa61, Dec 31, 2011
Thanx JC you're right - actually I'll delete that one :) - Kiwi-Girl, Dec 31, 2011

With a few exceptions, translating single words between languages is a bad idea and is likely to lead to confusion more than anything else.
