Entre

Please remember this is NOT the verb ENTRAR!!

between, among

Note: This word will be the official Word of the Day and will be posted January 20, 2012.

If you have ideas for good words, please send me a PM – I will make it a future word of the day.

This thread is kindly moderated by drvicente. Please correct your posts according to drvicente’s indications and suggestions, and of course use the corrections to learn from your errors! smile.

Use the Word of the Day in a complete sentence that best exemplifies one of its definitions. Please provide both the Spanish and the English version and vote for other sentences that you like. The two best sentences (the most voted and the one selected by the mod and the thread owner) will be chosen to be used as the example sentences for the Word of the Day 30 days later based on votes and correctness. ********************************************************************************* Remember, you may NOT use a translator. This exercise is to test your abilities to write in both Spanish and English. ********************************************************************************* Only fully correct sentences are eligible to be chosen for the Word of the Day example sentences. ********************************************************************************** You may choose to include one picture with your sentences, but this picture may not be included in the Word of the Day email, so make sure your sentence is fully comprehensible without the visual aid .

The Palabra del Día will be posted one month in advance, and therefore will not match the word posted on the Website

Posts which will not be corrected or accepted:
• Captions with 3 words or less
• Paragraphs with more than 1 1/2 lines
• Posts which make no sense in either language
• Posts which consist mainly of lyrics or idioms which do not translate.
• Captions copied directly from books or other sources.
• Multiple posts from one person, or those who don't write the sentences in both English and Spanish.
Remember to correct your posts as suggested or they can NOT be "accepted".
Do not use subject pronouns in Spanish
Please refrain from overloading with graphic content (ie; bold smileys, etc). It makes it harder for the correctors to be able to read your posts…. )

My Example:

Tengo que levantarme todos los días a las cinco para ir a trabajar. Sé que es extraño, pero los fines de semana siempre me despierto entre las cinco y las seis de la mañana. Es muy triste.

I have to get up every day at five to go to work. I know it is strange, but on the weekends I always wake up between five and six in the morning. It is very sad.

I think I would have forgotten the "las" cinco y "las" seis, too. Good reminder! - Tosh, Dec 21, 2011
Wow - two mistakes that I shouldn't have made, well, cada día - I debated over that one...jeje - Gracias Heidii!! - 001a2987, Dec 21, 2011
I have the same experience! For me, though, I have a cat that gets me up at 4:30 a.m., if I don't get up on my own. - JoyceM, Dec 22, 2011

Entre nosotros , tengo dudas de la existencia de Padre Noel pero no lo digas a nadie.

Don't tell anyone, but just between ourselves, I have doubts about the existence of Father Christmas.

La disposición de vivir entre dos especies diferentes se denomina simbiosis.

The living arrangement between two different species is called symbiosis.

Correction as per drvicente: El estado de vivir juntos y tener una relación mutua entre dos especies diferentes se llama "el simbiosis".

Now, in this case, it is "I". "Me" is grammatically incorrect. Who is between them? Me am? No... I am! - Tosh, Dec 21, 2011
Even though "me" probably sounds better... :) - Tosh, Dec 21, 2011
Thanks a lot, Tosh :) So, should I leave "me"? - PrincessMariam, Dec 21, 2011
Hola, Jraider! :) Gracias! - PrincessMariam, Dec 21, 2011
Well, it "sounds" better because that is what we are used to hearing... at least in the United States... someone in England may disagree. Of course, if you change it to "I", you would have to say your sentence with an English accent. ;) - Tosh, Dec 21, 2011
And by "English accent", I mean like somebody from England. We don't have English accents in the states! lol - Tosh, Dec 21, 2011
Thanks for explainations, amigo! :D - PrincessMariam, Dec 21, 2011

Thanks, ushko! ;) - PrincessMariam, Dec 22, 2011
That means the first person pronoun is the object, not the subject, so me is correct. - jennysk, Dec 22, 2011
The first part of my comment was lost, sorry. I said the full phrase would be "the one between them is me" - jennysk, Dec 22, 2011
Thank you, Jenny! :) - PrincessMariam, Dec 28, 2011

Not sure about the word order in the Spanish one... I know the sentences are not the exact same, but as long as they mean roughly the same thing I'm happy. - rabbitwho, Dec 21, 2011
Al paciente le parecía muy importante que exista (haya) la confianza entre él y su doctor. - drvicente, Dec 21, 2011
Rabbit I put "haya" in parenthesis subjunctive form of "there is" if you wanted to replace it for "exista" either word works here! - drvicente, Dec 21, 2011
I am confused, I don't understand what's wrong with the other sentence apart from needing "al" Can someone explain? - rabbitwho, Dec 21, 2011
I know that "To the patient confidentiality between him and the doctor seems very important" is absolutely wrong in English but I thought it was okay in Spanish? - rabbitwho, Dec 21, 2011
Rabbit your sentence is fine...I did not mean to make it complex. Good job! - drvicente, Dec 22, 2011
