Can the word so be used in spanish before a statement?

As in: So, what are you doing? So, how was your day? etc.

You may use "entonces' in a similar way. Not exactly the same, but it is close.

¿Entonces, como te fue hoy?

Bueno and pues would work, too, right? ¿Bueno, cómo te fue hoy? ¿Pues, cómo te fue hoy? I am fairly certain about pues but I am less certain about bueno. - webdunce, Dec 6, 2011

I agree with Guillermo, however unlike so, entonces can also be used as a noun, meaning a certain time period in the past, ie: "En ese entonces, no habían criminales manejando los bancos como ahora."

Yes, and I still have a difficult time using it that way as I associate it so strongly with so (or therefore) or with then when then is used in an if-then sort of way. - webdunce, Dec 6, 2011
