The direct obj. is the "thing" you are refering to, the object of the sentence that is in question.

EG. I ate a cake. - the D.Obj. is the cake as it is the thing in the sentence.

He walked the dog . again, Dog is the D.Obj. as the person "he" in this case, is directly doing an action to that object.

I opened the door - Here "I" the person is doing an action to the door and so the door is the D.Obj.

Indirect object pronouns however - They answer the question “To or for whom is the subject doing something?” refer only to people (and beloved pets). An indirect object pronoun can replace an indirect object noun.

All this sounds quite complicated until you really see examples in action. Basically when you want to say something like "to me" in English, that is when you use it.

He gave it to me, she listens to me.

let's look at

He gave it to me

Here you have to first find the D.Obj. before starting.Remember this is the object that the person or verb acts directly upon. Here it is "it" (it could be a present or a bike or anything)

To me is then the ID.Obj. pronoun. translating it would be like this.

to me - me

and it goes before the verb.

followed by the D.O pronoun.

Me lo dio - he gave it to me

Of course it gets more complicated but maybe this can help as a small guide to refer back ot the lesson. check out the reference section here

it explains it in more depth.

The Reference section here has good information on these topics. Direct objects are described in this link. Indirect objects are in this link.
