Do you get anything out of reading the threads?

I've learned an immense amount reading the threadsexcaim

To note just a couple of the short ones today: Ya que = ni modo; and Demasiado and Bastante.

True, I'm just a baby beginner, but I wonder if anyone else learned anything from these small threads? Because the first got 114 views, and the second 37 views.

But there were almost no votes!! question

What I can't understand is, if you're there reading a thread and think, "Humm, that's interesting," why don't you click on the vote button to give a token thank you"??

In my opinion, we have some exceptional people who take a lot of time and effort to respond to such questions. Personally, I would love it if you'd show your appreciation by clicking on this:

P.S. I even vote up responses in threads which date back a few yearsexcaim

Most of the people who made those posts are still here, and when they go and look at their "reputation activity," they will see a posting they wrote eons ago is still appreciated by someone. cool smile

And someone is appreciating your attitude, so voting. - siempre, Aug 14, 2011
Thanks, Siempre (love your name!!), but I was really hoping to see voting activity for other, more hard working members! ¡A propósito, he disfrutado viendo tus mensajes en el pasado! - territurtle, Aug 14, 2011

I usually vote up any thread or answers I like, even a little. I'm pretty liberal with my votes.

I also agree with you, Terri. For me the daily threads of Palabras/Word/Picture of the Day are the best, funniest and quickest manner I have ever used to learn a language. I already learned the basics of Spanish in 1988, but I have never spoken or used Spanish in any other way except for 3 months in Nicaragua in 2003.

When I started to revise my Spanish in December last year, my head was full of Hindi and I only remembered the regular forms of the verbs in the present indicative in Spanish. So, I have first practiced on other sites conjugations and vocabulary until I stumbled upon SD. After having done all lessons of Paralee, I discovered the abovementioned threads. I think they are EXTREMELY useful.

I read everything other people post and I have noticed more and more people are commenting on other people's post in Spanish, which I can only recommend. I found by writing so many comments every day, you notice that one day the language comes to you much more naturally until the point that you notice you are commenting immediately in Spanish without having to translate it first from English. So many people are putting their posts which have useful or interesting grammar constructions that I have started to make flashcards by the week for the thread of Chris. I also thought it was such a shame that nothing was done with all the corrections we receive. I would like to do it also for the other 2 threads, but it is quite time consuming, so probably I won't manage.

I always make it a point to vote. I vote for almost everybody; either because I like their post, or maybe I don't like it but I see a useful grammar construction. I also would like to use this opportunity to thank all the people who so generously donate time and efforts to make this all a success!!

Sorry I made it such a long story and took so much of your time smile

Those threads have helped me to start thinking in Spanish, at leas as far as my vocab allows. - MaryMcc, Aug 14, 2011
I devoured every word of your post -- as I usually do! You're still my inspiration!! - territurtle, Aug 14, 2011
I experience the same thing, Wilbur and that is soooo fantastic . . . . :) - Ingeteacher, Aug 14, 2011

I don't read threads often, I mostly come here for the dictionary.

Threads with like 100 views but only one comment and one or two votes are either threads where the poster has refreshed or visited his question many times, or where many people have come to see if they know the answer to the question but find out that they don't.

I have a few things in mind when I do vote though, and it all boils down to the fact that votes aren't about who you like or who you appreciate they are about who has given the best information.

I don't vote up questions I can't verify myself with my own knowledge, unless it is an answer by Lazarus or Heidita, or Qfreed, or any other well-known geniuses, and because I think we need to help people learn to solve their own problems, if the original poster and the person who posts and answer have more than 1000 reputation I don't vote up questions that can be googled in less than 10 seconds, unless it is clear that the OP is still at a very very beginner level and only has reputation because they are a fun person who actively participates in things like the coffee thread, or the daily picture/word etc. threads. I'll answer questions like this if I know the answer, of course, because every question deserves an answer, that is what makes SD a quality site, but I don't vote the question or the answers up for things like this because I don't want to promote people doing things that aren't in their best interest for learning.

Exceedingly well written post. But I guess I was talking about answers which I learned something important from. What about those? - territurtle, Aug 14, 2011
However, you do bring up some good points about indiscriminate voting! - territurtle, Aug 14, 2011
Well, if I learn things it usually takes a while for me to verify it if it something more complex than "why is it el agua?" So unless I know the person who answered knows what they are talking about, I may not even be able to find the thread to... - Fredbong, Aug 14, 2011
vote up by the time I verify its accuracy. - Fredbong, Aug 14, 2011
Completely understandable!! Thanks so much for you input, *really* helpful! :-) - territurtle, Aug 14, 2011

When I come across a thread with useful and interesting information I not only vote for the question and some of the answers but also save the thread in a favorites folder. The threads are then easy to find and review.

I've been doing that too. My "favorites" folders are starting to get out of control. - pesta, Aug 14, 2011
Hey, looks like a lot of us have had the same idea! You're one of those people I had in mind when I wrote this thread -- you're always so generous with your time and expertise. A gillion thank you's!! - territurtle, Aug 14, 2011

Yes, Terry. Sometimes, I don't understand what goes on with the voting and why people don't vote up threads that give good answers and information. There is a lot of hard work that goes into some of these threads. It doesn't cost us anything to vote up a thread, so why not vote?

And Sanlee, I know you've put in more loving work than just about anyone else -- and never *for* yourself, but selflessly for others. No thanks is enough. - territurtle, Aug 14, 2011

I do vote for the poster of threads I like, just not often enough. You guys are right and I will try to correct this .I hope we all do. I learn from these threads, and appreciate them and the people that take the time to make them and monitor them. Thank You.

I don't get to READ as may threads as I would like. I'm just too busy! But those that I do, I make sure to vote for the questions and answers that I like and/or find interesting.
I'm going to have to start doing what Swampy says he does.. save the good question threads in a special file.

This topic comes up every few months and it's always relevant.

I always say the same thing, "If you play a game, enjoy a thread, find something interesting, etc., it costs Z E R O to to click that "vote" button." It's not about reputations points...it's about showing the poster your appreciation.

Personally, I vote for:

!) Newbies who make a little effort to post properly and say "Please" or "Thank you." This, I think encourages them to post again.

2) The superstars of the forum Heidi, Lazarus, Izanoni, Gekkosan, Qfreed, and many more, who selflessly impart their knowledge.

3) The daily posters of Pic / Word of the Day because they take the time to give us great games to play. I vote for everyone who posts on the Pic / Word of the Day because they put effort into creating a unique sentence.

4) Thought-provoking posts or answers.

5) Anyone who plays my games :p

P.s. I always vote for TerriTurtle, not because her posts are thoughtful and interesting (which they are) but because she's from my hometown of Boston!
