Si Despegar is the word, seems silly to an english speaker to say " unstick" though

Not silly really, we say "take off" just the same as we say "take off" an article of clothing. This must seem strange to a spanish speaker. - Eddy, Jul 29, 2011

Despegar= Take off. taking off= despegando.

The plane is taking off= El avión esta despegando/ El aeroplano esta despegando.

Despegue: taking off Aterrizaje= landing

In English there is no verb - only phrasal verbs - take-off - lift off

"To launch" is only used for rockets for example.

Spanish is despegar which literally translates to "unstick"

So I guess both languages have a problem with this.
