Sí is also used to emphasise a statement e.g.Carlos sí peude tocar la armónica, you could leave the sí out of this statement but by adding it you are saying: Carlos can indeed play the harmonica.A nancy sí le gusta a miguel. Nancy really does love Miguel. and so on-

Si with an accent [Sí ] means "yes". Obviously, you use that when you want to say "yes" instead of "no". Basically, use it when you agree with something.

Sí, tengo hambre. Yes, I am hungry.

Sí, soy alta. Yes, I'm tall.

Sí, necesito ayuda. Yes, I need help.

Si without the accent [Si] means "if".

Very good question. I hope I helped you. grin

I find the emphatic context used a lot and the most confusing, because the si without the accent (atonic) can sometimes serve in that manner.

Este me gusta = I like this one

Este sí (que) me gusta = This one, yes, I like it. (= I really/do like this one)

¡Si ya se han ido! = ¡[No tiene sentido] Si ya se han ido!

[It doesn't make sense] if they have already left!

The dictionary has some good examples.

(tonic)

I find the emphatic context used a lot and the most confusing, because the si without the accent (atonic) can sometimes serve in that manner.

éste sí que me gusta -> this one I [really like] (dictionary didn't finish the sentence)

si (atonic)

but (expresa protesta)

¡si te dije que no lo hicieras! -> but I told you not to do it!
