It is not on this list of verbs that use "a" before an object.

evitar

I don't see the "a" being used in the dictionary examples.

podría haberse evitado esta catástrofe -> this disaster could have been avoided o prevented

no "a" before esta catástrofe

It depends on what noun is and the context.

Meaning "to avoid":

Evitar la tentación [D.O]

Evitar a los que hablan de política [D.O. with personal 'a']

Meaning "to save"

Evitarle a alguien [I.O] problemas [D.O.] = To save someone problems

Why no le in the last example? Or is that a d.o. with an object complement; the a being a personal "a"??? - 0074b507, Jun 20, 2011
