What is the word for new?
Here's the situation. I was in class last Wednesday evening and told everyone I had a new Bible by using the word "nueva", but everyone told me that word was not used in Mexico and other Latin American countries to reference new possessions. The word they recommended sounded like it started with an "es", but I didn't write it down. I asked them to repeat it, but now I've forgotten it. A high school Spanish teacher was in the class with me later, but she was not familiar with the word either.
They used it in sentences for "I have a new car" or "I have a new shirt".
Does anyone know what the word is? I can't find it in any dictionary and I feel like a fool to ask them to repeat it.

I swallowed my pride and called one of the guys back.
He spelled the word as "estreneir", but the closest I can find in the dictionary is "estreno(a)" meaning new. There is a similar verb "estrenar" meaning "to use for the first time".
Does this sound right?

Interesting. The dictionary here has something similar under Estrenar.

I'm familiar with estrenar, but always in terms of doing something for the first time or debuting something, not as a substitute for nuevo. Estreno algo, I guess.

The two Mexicans and 1 Costa Rican that I presented this question wouldn't agree, They didn't have a clue.
