Why no tilde in "solo". The who and why.
Hi all. I was just informed that "solo" does not require a tilde anymore.
Who makes these decisions, and why. Why before, and not now?
I would love a detailed explanation if possible.
Hey Lazarus, where are you?

The Academies of Spanish from 22 countries have made that decision. Why now, I don't know, but I suspect that it is because the meaning of these two words has become too close in most circumstances. "Sólo" now only take the accent if the sentence is ambiguous:
Voy solo al cine = I am going alone to the cinema / I am just going to the cinema
The above sentence could be either, so in these cases, you have to use the accent for the second one (sólo = just)
Hey, Lazarus is not the only knowledgable person here, dear Marshi![]()
these decissions are made by the Real Academia de la Lengua (RAE) which sets standards and rules for the use of Spanish in general.
Solo used to be distinguished by sólo with an accent because of its meaning:
solo = alone
sólo = solamente= only
However, both have the same pronunciation (they are both pronounced on the same syllable ) and it was decided that there was no reason to use an accent on the word unless the meaning were unclear.
This was the prior reasoning regarding according to the DPD:
In cases where there is no ambiguity between its use as an adjective or an adverb, the tilde was considered unnecessary:
3.2.3. sólo/solo.
La palabra solo puede ser un adjetivo:
?No me gusta el café solo;
?Vive él solo en esa gran mansión;o un adverbio:
?Solo nos llovió dos días;
?Contesta solo sí o no.*Se trata de una palabra llana terminada en vocal, por lo que, según las reglas generales de acentuación (? 1.1.2), no debe llevar tilde.
Why was the tilde used in the past? To avoid ambiguity in cases where the word could have been mistaken for an adjective when it was meant to be used adverbially:
Ahora bien, cuando esta palabra pueda interpretarse en un mismo enunciado como adverbio o como adjetivo, se utilizará obligatoriamente la tilde en el uso adverbial para evitar ambigüedades:
?Estaré solo un mes (al no llevar tilde, solo se interpreta como adjetivo: en soledad, sin compañía);
?Estaré sólo un mes (al llevar tilde, sólo se interpreta como adverbio: solamente, únicamente);también puede deshacerse la ambigüedad sustituyendo el adverbio solo por los sinónimos solamente o únicamente.
The RAE justifies such changes by stating that the cases in which context is not sufficient to clear up ambiguities are rare, and that using the tilde in this way does not coincide with the general rules governing its use.
I still use the tilde and I don't care. . .I crack corn too ![]()
What Lazarus said. Oops, and Ira for the other part of the question. ![]()
