I suggest you purchase Demystifying Spanish Grammar by Brandon Simpson. I promise that you will never ask a grammar question of anyone again. I have been studying Spanish since 2008 and could not, would not 'get' the different uses of the two tenses, and I was studying every single day. After finishing this book I have no problem with Spanish grammar.

This site has reference pages for the peterite and imperfect tenses. The links below will take you to them. They are very helpful to describe the use of preterite and imperfect.
