Instead of posting this as a killer thread, I thought I might post one sentence every other day or so.

He was discrete in his success and reserved in his failure, as if he knew that fame is just a fragile truce that one takes before the next and inevitable relapse. The unforgettable Severiano Ballestros was so safe in his retreat, that makes one believe that death must have guessed his whereabouts in a place about which only the nostalgia, the sea and the oblivion knew some things.

Parece decirnos que Severiano era de personalidad tan contenida y reservado, que ha la muerte le ha llegado mansa y sin hacer mucho ruido, pero despiadada y sin rodeos. Homenaje a un ser humano, a un personaje mediático que llegó a ser el mejor de su tiempo desde la nada. A un hombre que renegó de la popularidad y de la a veces injusta fama, y que aceptó y luchó con coraje contra la enfermedad hasta el último aliento. Reconocimiento a quien eligió llevar su vida y su muerte de la manera más íntima y digna posible.

My attempt to comment:
This comment by Alvite is one of the saddest I've ever read. He seems to say that Severiano had such a restrained and reserved personality that even the death, though merciless, has come to him meekly and without making too much noise. although mercilessly.
Tribute to a man, a media personality who became the best of his time from a humble starting point. A man who reneged on the glory and the sometimes unfair popularity that followed him, a man who accepted and fought bravely against the disease until his last minute. Recognition to whom a man who chose to lead his life, and death, in the most intimate and dignified way.

Everybody was right on spot on this thread, Alvite and Spain as a whole loved this man, this has been just my small complement to this great man and great sportsman.

This is too close to the bone for me to even try to translate. My Father had his first major heart attack 20 years ago and is now retired and living on a golf course and plays several times per week--that is what he lives for, other than his grandchildren. His Father retired in a similar fashion.
