How would you tell someone to "be safe" or "be careful"? It doesn't seem like it would literally translate right. I tried thinking of another way to say it and came up with nothing. Thank you for your help. =]

Cuidado, ten cuidado, cuídate all mean be careful. To me be safe and be careful are two different things.

Kevin has said the many ways best... I would just like to add, the most common is "cuídate". =) - DJ_Huero, Apr 20, 2011

Have you ever seen the colored warning tape around work sites. That tape has a word in English and the corresponding word in Spanish-caution & cuidado.

If my daughter were leaving for a night out I would say "vete con cuidado'

Hello Robison and Welcome to the SpanishDict forumgrin

The Spanish use the verb tener to indicate having care rather than being careful

¡Ten Cuidado! = Be careful!

¡Ten Cuidado con la cocina caliente!= Be careful with the hot stove

For more ideas on how to use the verb cuidar I suggest you check out our excellent phrase book at SpanishDict. Here is a direct link to the phrasebook link text

I hope that helps grin
