Does it mean, fue and era both are correct?

Yes, both are correct! I hate the typical questions about imperfect/preterite where the writer of the book decides for some strange reason that only one option is correct, even though both are correct.

"Fue" isn't used because preterit simple tense is used to

Indicate Single Events Took Place in the Past

Indicate an Action that Happened at or for a Specific Amount of Time

Narrate Individual Events

Indicate the Beginning or End of an Action in the Past

"Fue" is perfect. Ask any native. Besides, those "rules" have a serious problem: preterite can easily be used for several events (e.g. Fui muchas veces), without having to specify a specific amount of time or indicate the beginning or end of it.

"Era" and "fue" are conjugations of "ser" in imperfect past tense and preterit simple tense respectively.

In your sentence, "ser" is used to tell time and dates in the past. In this case, "era" (imperfect tense) is used.

Imperfect Past (SpanishDict Reference Guide)

3. Telling Time and Dates in the Past

Eran las tres de la tarde. (It was three o´clock in the afternoon.)

Era el jueves, el 9 mayo. (It was Thurday, the 19th of May.)

"Fue" isn't used because preterit simple tense is used to

  1. Indicate Single Events Took Place in the Past
  2. Indicate an Action that Happened at or for a Specific Amount of Time
  3. Narrate Individual Events
  4. Indicate the Beginning or End of an Action in the Past

I go with fue, I don't know why you are getting conflicting viewpoints here.

La oracion es muy corta sin contexto. Diaría: "Ayer aunque FUE domingo" Bye

Fui would never be correct because it's the conjugation of the verb To Go (Ir) instead of Ser. The right spelling would be fue. Your sentence is too short to make sense. As it is it's hard to tell which option is better. My initial gut feeling tells me fue would be the right answer.

Telling time usually uses era, however all rules must be broken and I often hear fue with ayer. This is the problem with learning through rules and books and such, rather than just immersing yourself into the language. Era probably is more grammatically correct, if I were to talk about a date far in the past I would use era, but with anoche or something closer fue sounds better. This is based on what I hear not what I learned from some book or something. The people telling you to use era with dates are right, but if you want to get grammatical I would say that fue is used more for events, and yesterday and last night are events. To me at least.

This page says:

  1. Telling Time and Dates in the Past Eran las tres de la tarde. (It was three o´clock in the afternoon.) Era el jueves, el 9 mayo. (It was Thurday, the 19th of May.)

Does it mean, fue and era both are correct?

in general when you use ayer it implies a limited time therefor fue is the best answer.
