Está or están here in this sentence?

Question

Coca-cola , té y café están sobre la mesa. Sírvanse ustedes mismos.

Coc-cola , té y café todo está sobre la mesa.Sírvanse ustedes mismos.

I have two questions here, 1. Those two sentences , do they mean the same or which one is correct? In my book says the second one,but I wonder if I can put it in the first form, is it also correct?

1. Why has Mismo here?? What does it mean here ? How to translate this sentence with Mismo?

Possibly (I'm not 100% sure): Coca-cola, tea, and coffee...each is on the table. Serve yourselves.

Mismo can translate as "self" into English...

ustedes mismos / tú mismo / mí mismo = yourselves / yourself / myself

It can also translate as "this very" or "right"...

ahora mismo = right now or this very moment

este mismo lugar = this very place

Sírvanse ustedes mismos means like selfservice: Ustedes se sirven a ustedes.

La coca-cola, el té y el café... Con el artículo delante es más correcto. Sin el artículo estás tratando las bebidas como nombres propios: Pedro y Juan están sobre la mesa. La cerveza y el agua están sobre la mesa.

No decimos sobre la mesa. Por lo general decimos en la mesa, aunque sobre sea correcto. - gone, Jan 24, 2011
