Tomar and Bebir both mean to drink. Is there a difference in usage between the two?

The spelling of beber in your title and post needs correcting, you can correct your post but I think that an administrator has to correct the title. - kenwilliams, Jan 15, 2011

Tomar means to have or take and although Puedes tomar una cerveza means you are going to have a beer and sure you are going to drink it Beber actually means to drink as example the waiter might come to your table and say: ¿Qué van a tomar? what are you going to have? and you will give him your order and if it is a meal he will then say ¿Y para beber? And to drink?

hi friend

" tomar" in indicating to the meaning "to have" is general. so, it can include drinking and eating. but beber and comer has limited implication. beber is used just in the cases of drinkings (bebidas) wheras comer is used in the cases solid foods. so, tomar can be used in the place of one the two but comer and beber can not be replaced with eachother.

so, in their meaning constituants, toamr generally means "to have" but beber means " to have liquid foods" and comer means " to have solid foods".

Here in Bolivia Tomar is used for drinks like tea coffee or juice and Beber is used for alcohol.

The main difference is that tomar is a verb, & bebir isn't. Beber is.
