I'm confused when you're supposed to use these, could someone please help? Also to translate They escaped, would it be se escapó?

I would start with the last article on transitive and intransitive sentences because in

Se escapó.

it jumps out to me as the "detransitizing se", although, there are other ways to explain it.

It removes the [what] from the transitive sentence "He escaped [what]" and makes it an intransitive sentence.

It reminds me a lot of Lazarus' comic strip on ir and irse.

By the way. They escaped. Se escaparon.

First you should study carefully the Pronouns part in the Reference section.

And to learn how to conjugate the verb escapar in 3rd person plural you should check the verbs part of this section.
