In trying to translate the pharase: 'he was numb with the cold' I was given these alternative translations. Which one is best?

'Estaba entumecido por el frío' 'Estuvo entumecido con el frío' ´él era entumecido con el frío´

Can anyone help please?

"Estaba entumecido por el frío" is the correct one, you can find it on our Dictionary too. Welcome to the forum!

numb on Spanishdict.com

And this might help you too: Compiled reference articles and excercises on "ser y estar".

why por rather than con - tom-mullee, Jan 14, 2011
'Por' can mean 'due to' as well - gavinmckee, Feb 7, 2011

'Estaba entumecido por el frío' 'Estuvo entumecido con el frío' ´él era entumecido con el frío´

'Ser' is used to define and classify. If you want to define that person as a "numb with the cold" kind of person, that's fine. Imagine: "What kind of person is he? Numb with the cold".

Thank you. The subject had fallen into a frozen pond and when taken out was described as 'numb with the cold'. I assume that as he was not numb by nature then it would not be correct to use 'ser'? - tom-mullee, Jan 14, 2011
