Capitalization and Proper Grammar.
There have been more and more instances of posts being made with incorrect grammar and lack of proper punctuation. I am not refering to beginning English speakers, but rather those who are fluent in English, but either do not know proper punctuation, or are simply unconcerned with using it.
There are many members here who are native Spanish speakers, who are trying to learn English. So please, think of proper capitalization, punctuation and general rules of English grammar. Let's give a good example of our beautiful language to those anxious to learn it.
Similarly, we should also expect Spanish postings to be as grammatically correct as is possible.

So, Joe, should we more 'senior members' offer to just take the initiative to edit these posts into correct form? I agree with you, but I know of no way of enforcing the 'rules' that people use the proper form. I agree that younger folks spend so much time texting that they have just gotten out of the habit of using proper spelling, punctuation and capitalization. In fact, I fear that this will only get worse, as the kids coming up behind them may never know in the first place how to compose a proper English sentence. I have often mused about what the next generation of writers will look like and, in the worst case scenario, it looks frightening.
We could do one of two things...we could either edit them to set an example, or the more senior members could write a pat note to those who do not submit in the correct form to please repost. The only problem we would run into there is that the brand new members would go ahead and answer the question anyway. They would also have to be reeducated, kindly, of course.
There are times where I am not on my game (ok, most of the time but...) and truly appreciate being corrected. It's ok people!! I have stated in other posts that if we knew everything about the languages why would we need to be here (English speakers typing in English and Spanish speakers typing in Spanish)? I can think of many people on this site that have a better grasp of the English language than I do. And guess what? It's ok!! I love learning from everybody. Thank you-all for helping me out. ![]()
I think the consensus is to edit as much as you like. Sometimes I'm in the mood and edit a lot. No one has told me to stop.
If they did, I could always refer to this discussion.
I have a huge problem with garbage English and garbage Spanish that's being perpetrated on the world through the use of technology and lazy minds.
So do I people seem to become lazier by the moment![]()
I would suggest that if someone posts something, and the entire post is correct except for one misspelled word, why not just correct that one word instead of 'correcting' it in a comment or making a big deal over it.
Thanks for bringing that up, Brian! I am unfortunately famous for my typos, even though I use a spell check and read everything a dozen times...I don't seem to be able to avoid typos. I would really appreciate if you could all just edit my posts , if you see a typo, thanks a lot!
Same with other people, a typo or a simple mistake is one thing, a post written with poor spelling because "im in a hury",,,is unacceptable ( I have had this answer more than once
)
On the other hand, if it's a "texting garbage post" then fire with everything you have
Well, I normally close the thread and point it out to the member to repost with correct spelling...it sometimes works![]()
Sometimes, even with being as careful as possible, we still make mistakes. Sometimes it's just a typo, an accidental misfire on the keyboard. You can tell if people are trying to post 'properly' or not. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be, and my mind is playing tricks on me. I have returned to pieces I've written in the past and wondered, "why in the heck did I write that?". I have no problem with the random mistake here and there, it's just going to happen. The movie Idiocracy comes to mind.
In my view, the worst problem posts use an abbreviated "text language" in the post. The language is so unfamiliar to me that I often can not determine the question. Also, if the thread is to be preserved for future reference, shorted texts and descriptions can make a search difficult for the computer. Automation often depends on correct spelling for accurate retrieval.
I continue to learn both English and Spanish with the exchange on this site. There are many posts and answers from the UK that use words I was taught to avoid. When I encounter these situations, I do not take the liberty to change the text, but I send a PM to the poster to verify the text is correct. For example, the past tense of "to learn" in the US is "learned". I understand it is "learnt" in the Oxford reference, but I was taught that was incorrect. When I hear people in this region use the word "learnt", they are corrected and often regarded as uneducated.
I did not realize until last night that I do not know what a gerund is. After high school, four years college, professional school, etc., I can not believe it, but it was indicated in a post.
Posts that do not employ proper grammer and spelling have also taught me how ambiguous communication can become when we don't follow the rules. Sometimes I can't even determine the question posed in the post.
I make a lot of typos, but I've noticed a deterioration in my English spelling abilities since I've been studying Spanish. Please feel free to correct my English or Spanish. I'm learning both!
Thanks for the opportunity to observe and contribute on occasion.
I agree completely with Joe, we have tended to be slack of late , I shall endeavor
to curb my enthusiasm , slow down and correct my posts . There is one point I think
that is worth mentioning ,and that is the difference between American and British
English,
We down here in the antipodes are sandwiched between the two , and are all too
often given a rocket from both camps . I am not suggesting that we be let off the
hook, but rather that the cane be gently applied and an allowance made for our
naiveté.

Why is this so hard to do for new members ?
I am sure that more and better answers would be forthcoming if they observed
our rules , or even asked a question in the same way they would approach
a stranger in the street and ask for directions.
I feel that I must make one more comment. Two days ago a comment was left on
my post to the effect that a word I used had caused some amusement to a member.
Athough he was right in in his assumption as to the meaning of the word,it was wrong
of me not to have explained the word . Kama, means the five sense objects , not
a bed as he thought I had implied , although that is probably where the word
originated . One can also use Kamma / Karma, from ,Pali/ Sanskrit. We are an
International site with many different Nationalities and cultures ,therefore we have to
use tact and understanding in our comments, that does not mean that we should
ignore bad grammar and spelling , that should still be our paramount quest.
I am not making excuses for my bad spelling , but I do have a problem in that
area , it has been the bane of my life that I cannot see some words as being
either wrong or right, I just do not see them , it is a type of dyslexia.
Therefore please correct me I implore you, it does help.
So did we reach a consensus? We should edit at least the subject line? I have noticed some members mention what they have edited - would that be helpful as well? Also I guess we should be 'reminding' new people to use proper spelling, capitalization etc. Yes it is soooo easy to fall into bad habits - especially if one is used to texting...
Yes, thanks for making this summary, sort of:
Edit the title, at least, if you have time enough, and the post is short, edit the post bolding the mistakes, like for example like this and pointing out that correct spelling is mandatory on this site.
If the member refuses to listen, flag the post so I can try to get in touch with them.
One can't help but notice those posts which lack punctuation and capitalisation etc, and I agree they don't set a good example for anybody.
In my case, I try to do my best but I'm nowhere near perfect in grammar and I'm excellent at making typos in both languages. Ray has pointed out the existence of a significant number of differences between American and British English, and the Antipodes (thank you Ray).
Thanks for the reminder Joe.
Yes Joe, I think your thoughts on the correct usage of the English language is spot on! However as one commentator observed, man is not beyond infallibility and we are still in the business of mastering the nuances of the English language, even for native speakers! So I believe the joy of fora like these is pointing out the mistakes of others and carrying out the diagnostics in a cheerful and precise manner, not in anyway condescending. Buena suerte!
I agree with Jack, that if a post is a good effort at correct writing, but there's a glaring typo, then just fix the typo and don't comment it to death. I often do just that.
However, sometimes, I find myself in a typo-correcting frame of mind and it isn't long before the website prevents me from making additional edits. There is some quota on how many edits are allowed per 24 hours. I don't see this limit value published in the forum guides. I wasn't counting, but it seems to me to be somewhere around 5 to 10, though I sense that 30-40 would be more appropriate.
So, I usually find myself in a quandry: Should I fix errors and maybe find myself short of privileges to make a more-important edit, or comment and/or ignore so I may reserve my edits for later?
Can our administrators suggest a way around this unproductive restriction?
Yes, I agree with those before me, and I also agree on the initial point made by Ray about the difference between British and American spelling....I'm British so I'd be saying 'colour' instead of 'color', however I will make sure that I check my posts for the correct punctuation, grammar, and capitalization. You'll just have to forgive me for taking the British route when it comes to spelling.
