informal se??? I've never heard that terminology? What does it mean? Are you trying to say "impersonal se"?

In the context of laying eggs poner can be transitive or ponerse can be intransitive.

Se ponen tres huevos could be passive reflexive in your example.

Three eggs were laid.

La gallina puso tres huevos. (transitive)

The hen laid three eggs.
