El Agua confusion

Question

Why is water, agua, called El agua instead of La agua? Agua ends with an**a*, so it's feminine, right? So why not use the feminine word, La? Again, I'm just a beginner, unknowing of the mighty laws of Spanish.

Although agua is a femenine noun when the noun starts with an "A" you use la in order to get the tongue round it but when it is pluralised we revert back to the norm in example Las aguas another example is the soul El alma but Las almas the souls.

As far as I know it's just an exception, like "el día" - the day. Probably something to do with etymology! We just have to learn the exceptions as we're going along.

Anyone know the real original reason?
