G A M E - Preterite vs Imperfect

G A M E - Preterite vs Imperfect

Objective: practice in the use of the past tenses, preterite & imperfect

The rules:-----------------------------

  1. translate the English sentence given by the person above into Spanish using the correct preterite or imperfect verb conjugations

make sure you click on N E W E S T before you begin

Then

  1. state whether you used the preterite or the imperfect and give a short explanation as to why you used it

  • and finally
  1. provide a new sentence in English which includes a verb used in the past

for the next person to translate.

Have fun! ¡Diviértanse!

A suggestion: please keep your sentences simple. This is tricky stuff, so let's concentrate on the tenses, ok? - Gekko.

PS: here's a great link showing how the preterite is for action in the past whereas the imperfect is an ongoing condition in the past: Imperfecto vs Preterito and another that I've put together that may be of some use too, Pret vs Imp.

A big thanks to Gekko who 'was' kindly correcting this thread - Gekko if you have a mo' please post a thread below introducing yourself or post empty thread for me to introduce you, thus allowing the grateful participants to vote for all your hard and much appreciated work here wink

Edit - Sadly Gekko doesn't come round much anymore :( we'd love it if he did but in the meantime any corrections or suggestions are gratefully accepted and if someone would like to volunteer to help with moderation of this game, that'd be awesome, please just let us know so we can welcome you officially to the possie (as us antipodeans say (ie. position))

Given: I tried to get out of bed, but my feet seemed glued together.

Translated: Intenté a levantarme, pero los pies parecían estar pegados juntos.

Reason: I was a little unsure about paracer, but i decided to go ahead and use the imperfect because they were like this over an unspecefied period of time, also one could say that it is "background" information or it states how something was. Intentar would be peterit, because its "one and done."

New: (Look at gringo's post below.)

Given:But in reality they were just tangled in the sheets

Attempt: Pero, en realidad, sólo se habían enrededado en las sábanas.

Reasoning: ongoing...and I've just read that we should use 'haber' more..

New:: Strangely, when I put my hands down to untangle the sheets, the skin on my legs felt very odd. Was it skin?

Given: Suddenly I found that I was breathing freely underwater and instead of legs I had a tail.

Translation: De repente supe que estaba respirando libremente abajo el aqua y en lugar de las piernas tenía una cola.

Reasoning: Supe because the realization occurs in an instant, estaba respirando because this is a continoue action and tenia just sounded better than tuve.

New: With my new tail I found that I could swim much faster.

Given:Last week when we went to the beach, we swam, drank cerveza and ate ceviche while the kids played in the water.

Translation: La semana pasada fuimos a la playa y nadamos ,bebimos unas cervezas y comimos ceviche mientras los niños pasaban un rato jugando en el mar.

Reasoning: The preterite as it was a one off outing at a defined time. I would agree that it may have gone on for a good while and could be the background to a shark coming iun and eating the children up, which would change it all..

New: It was a lovely outing until the life-guard suddenly shouted: 'Sharks! Sharks!'

New: It was late at night, and the air was cold.

Translation: Era tarde de noche y el aire se sentía frío.

Reasoning: Imperfect because it appears to me that you're scene-setting for something that will happen in the next sentence. If it is the whole story, maybe it should be in the preterite, but it would be a very dull story!

New sentence: The building work went well to start with, but once the inspector arrived, everything slowed down.

I suspect there are better ways of saying this, the weather is very difficult, I find. - annierats, Jan 16, 2012
"hacer frío / calor" is used when you're talking about your percetion of the temperature: "It's cold out there" - have frío afuera. In this case, though, we're not talking abou the exterior temperature, but about the air's temperature. We have to say it - Gekkosan, Jan 16, 2012
in a different way. Otherwise the sentence is fine. :-) - Gekkosan, Jan 16, 2012
Ok, I'll think on it whilst I make supper.. - annierats, Jan 16, 2012
This is but a game try, I actually fail to see how the air can feel itself, but I can but try. - annierats, Jan 16, 2012
The temperature of the air is a fact as stated in this sentence. Not an opinion. Like it felt cold to me. I vote for "estuvo frio" - gringojrf, Jan 16, 2012
You may be right, but i can't ever remember having heard estar used with weather.. But it might be, I'm no oracle, that's for sure. - annierats, Jan 16, 2012
So, I've gone for the most straightforward solution: era... - annierats, Jan 17, 2012
Gringo is almost right, but if you are going to use ser /estar, then in this case the correct tense is: "estaba". El aire estaba frío. However, "el aire se sentía frío" is a perfectly good and elegant solution. - Gekkosan, Jan 17, 2012
Very well done, Annie! - Gekkosan, Jan 17, 2012

Given Sentence: It was early in the morning and I was not fully awake when I heard a knock on my door.

Era temprano en la mañana y no había despierto completamente cuando oí un golpe en la puerta.

Reasoning. Imperfect for time and the interrupted action. Preterite for the interrupting action.

New Sentence: After many years she lost her battle to live when her kidneys failed.

New Sentence: The building work started well, but after the inspector arrived everything slowed down.

Translation: La construcción de edificio comenzó bien, pero después de que el inspector de edificios llegó todo el trabajo se retardó.

Reason: Preterite for "comenzar" y "llegar" because you start or arrive only in an instant, then you cease starting or arriving. "Retardar" could have gone either way I think, but I chose preterite because I am working on the assumption that the work resumed its usual speed after the inspector left. That puts the slowing down in a specific time frame.

PS: Sorry, annie, for changing your original sentence a bit. red face

New Sentence: It was early in the morning and I was not fully awake when I heard a knock on my door.

Change what you like Holly, if not, this game gets stuck all the time! Good effort. - annierats, Jan 17, 2012
The tenses are correct the way you wrote them, Holly. It has to be preterite. Two details to fix: "después de *que* el inspector.." and "el trabajo *se* retardó". - Gekkosan, Jan 17, 2012
I like the interpretation you chose; I think it's very appropriate. Just as a note, a more literal (not necessarily better) translation would be: "después de que el inspector llegó, todo se puso lento". You did it right, though. - Gekkosan, Jan 17, 2012

Given Sentence: After 6 months of trying he eventually gave up.

Attempted translation:Intentaba hacerlo para seís meses antes de se dio por vencido.

New try:: Tras de seis meses de intentarlo se dio por vencido???

Reasoning: The trying went on over a period of time and was the back-ground to giving up, which was a one off action.

New sentence: It rained and rained and after some thought, Noah purchased a large load of wood.

Después siés meses de tratando (intentando) él se dio por vencido. - gringojrf, Jan 14, 2012
Good, you can do it then! - annierats, Jan 14, 2012

después -de- - rabbitwho, Jan 14, 2012
After six months: Tras / después de seis meses de..... Let's see if we can finish the sentence, without useing personal pronoun. :-) - Gekkosan, Jan 16, 2012
Shall I take the3 'se ' out? - annierats, Jan 16, 2012
No, the "se" is fine, but not the "él" that Gringo suggested. - Gekkosan, Jan 16, 2012
I've just restructured it! - annierats, Jan 16, 2012
Oh, very good! "Tras seis meses de intentarlo, (finalmente) se dio por vencido". - Gekkosan, Jan 16, 2012
Gracias, Gekko. I fear I have a terible tendency to remove the difficulty. It is due to having had to talk before I had learnt the language.. - annierats, Jan 16, 2012

Given Sentence: It rained and rained and after some thought, Noah purchased a large load of wood.

Translation: Llovió y llovió y después de pensarlo un poco, Noah compró una gran carga de madera.

Reason: Llover is preterite because the action started and ended. Comprar is preterite because it is a one time event that took place in the past.

New Sentence: It was 5 o clock in the morning when the phone rang.

I imagined the rainy period so long that it would be llovía y llovía? Is this also possible? - annierats, Jan 16, 2012
hmmm I don't think that'd work, personally, just like it sounds better in English 'it rained and rained' and we wouldn't say 'it was raining and it was raining' je je je :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 16, 2012
Thank you kiwi. - annierats, Jan 16, 2012

Given: A long time ago people believed the Earth was flat and that it was the center of the universe.

Translation: Hace mucho tiempo la gente creía que el mundo era plano y que estaba en el centro del universo.

Reason: ser for a quality, era because it was a state that was true at that time. Estar for location, estaba because it was a state / situation true at that time. Because what they beleived actually isn't true I'm wondering if I shouldn't use the subjunctive and say "fuera" and "estuviera" but we'll find out!

New Sentence: After 6 months of trying he eventually gave up.

Why Creyeron and not Creían? The prople believed for a long time. - gringojrf, Jan 14, 2012
I'm thinking of it more as an action which started and ended in the past than a situation. You could be right, esta gramatica me cuesta mucho. - rabbitwho, Jan 14, 2012
Heck I'm not sure either. - gringojrf, Jan 14, 2012
And we both forgot that gente is singular.. . darn you Spanish! you tricked us! - rabbitwho, Jan 14, 2012
K I changed it to creía. I think you're right! - rabbitwho, Jan 14, 2012
lol. So many traps to fall into. By the way I understood your original and to me that is more important than perfect grammar. - gringojrf, Jan 14, 2012
Hey Rabbit a tip that might help is that creer que - is always followed by the indicative (whether it's true or not) - no creer que is the one that's followed by the subjunctive :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 14, 2012
and another trap for young players - the English version says 'it was the centre of the universe' not that it was 'in' the centre of the universe, do you that might change your choice? ;) - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 14, 2012
Agree with Kiwi´s last comment. The meaning of the Spanish version is different than that of the English version. - Gekkosan, Jan 16, 2012
By the way, a fair number of people believe today that the Earth is flat and that it is the center of the Universe. - Gekkosan, Jan 16, 2012

**given ** Before I didn't know much about Spanish grammar but last week I learnt a lot aout ser and estar.

translation Antes no sabía mucho sobre la gramática española pero la semana pasada aprendí mucho acerca de ser y estar.

reason.. I used the imperfect for saber as before last week indicates something you were not aware of in the past. and preterit for aprender for something you found out about at a specific time in the past. ( but then again I stand to be corrected ) having trouble with the reason section of this thread . New sentence.

I started walking for my health 3 years ago.

Hi Jenny, well you say there that you used the preterite for saber for the first part but actually you've used the imperfect - this is good really because saber in the imperfect usually means 'knew' but in the preterite it means 'found out' :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 10, 2012
So I'd stick with the imp for the first bit - Antes no sabía mucho sobre la gramática española ... Now do you want to have a think about the second part? You're on to something with the 'specific time in the past' so which tense fits that best? - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 10, 2012
I'll wait for a corrected version as per Kiwi's instructions before I make any further comments. - Gekkosan, Jan 10, 2012
Thanks kiwi girl ,I hope this amended version is more feasable. I will be amazed if I actually get this. - jennyo45, Jan 10, 2012
Thanks Gekkosan ,let me down lightly. - jennyo45, Jan 10, 2012
It's better. For the first part: "sobre la gramática española". The tense if fine. For the second part, you have to change to preterite. It's done and over with. - Gekkosan, Jan 10, 2012
gracias gekkosan,should I have put apprendi,?I accentuated. - jennyo45, Jan 15, 2012

Given:Even though I saw the murder take place, I decided to stay not involved because of the high threat of gang activity.

Translation: Aunque vi al homocidio , resolví a no involucrarme en estas cosas, porque no me gustaba arriescarme con las activades mafiosas.

Reasoning: The murder was a one off, sen once and the decicion was also made only once. I just think gustaba sounds better...

New Sentence: Once I had determined to commit suicide I immediatly searched out the tallest towerblock and climbed all the stairs, only to find that the only accessible window was too small for me to climb out, without risking being stuck, neither in, nor out. This sentence may be shortened, as you please!

This answer is made so we can move on with the game, not because I'm sure of it, I hope that's acceptable? - annierats, Jan 12, 2012
Maybe there should be two 'en' s ? - annierats, Jan 12, 2012
Even though = aunque. Mientras = while. I am not familiar with "ariscarse". but for the last phrase I would say. "por el riesgo alto de las actividades pandillas. - gringojrf, Jan 12, 2012
I think Annie meant "arriesgarse", to take the chance, tu run the risk. - Gekkosan, Jan 12, 2012
Actually not bad; just a couple of details: Aunque vi el homicido, resolvÍ no involucRarme en eso, porque no quería arriesgrarme con las actividades mafiosas. - Gekkosan, Jan 12, 2012
I like the New Sentence, but it is rather long and complex for the purpose of this exercise and the average level of most players. Since you wrote it, I suggest you provide some corrections for Gringo, hm? :-) - Gekkosan, Jan 12, 2012
Gracias Gekkosan. It is too long, I'll do shorter ones in future, I promise. I have put a couple of suggestions but I'm thinking about being stuck, like Whinnie the Pooh.... - annierats, Jan 13, 2012

Given: Our teacher was very old but one day he surprised us by jumping onto the desk like a youngster.

Translation: Nuestro profesor era muy viejo pero un día nos sorprendió al saltar en el escritorio como un jovencito.

Reasoning: well him being old was a state or a thing that was true in that period, while his jumping on the desk was something which happened only once, or at least I'm only talking about one time.

New: I saw the puppy was going to fall so I stood under the window hoping to catch him.

That's what I thought wwhen I madeit up, but luckily, I didn't have to answer it, myself. - annierats, Jan 10, 2012
That maybe means he cought us out hopping around on his desk, come to think of it.. - annierats, Jan 10, 2012
Not really: hopping around on his desk would be "Nos sorprendió saltando sobre su escritorio". You can also say: "nos sorprendió al saltar sobre su escritorio", if you want to avoid any possible misunderstandings. - Gekkosan, Jan 10, 2012

Given: Because I was fired from my job last week, I applied to several businesses downtown.

Translation: Ya que me despidieron de mi trabajo la semana pasada, solicité trabajo en el centro con varias empresas.

Reason: "Being fired from the job" is presented as a single, completed action and requires the preterite. Likewise, the act of applying for jobs is viewed in the same way and also requires the preterite.

New sentence: Upon entering the room, I was greeted by the screeching sound of hundreds of agitated bats.

Sory izanoni, we did it at the same time, yours is much better! - annierats, Jan 11, 2012
While this is correct, somehow it is not the way I would choose to translate this sentence. "Ya que" in my view implies something like: "I might as well apply, since I was fired". - Gekkosan, Jan 11, 2012
My choice of translation would go: "Solicté trabajo.... debido a que me despidieron", or " En vista de que me despidieron... solicité trabajo", or "Solicité trabajo...porque me despidieron" - Gekkosan, Jan 11, 2012
Thanks Gekko...I wonder, could you use "Como" to start the sentence? This was my first choice, but I changed it because I wasn't sure it sounded right. I also considered "debido a que" but got scared off because I thought it might be too wordy for this - Izanoni1, Jan 11, 2012
Yes, "Como" would have been perfect. - Gekkosan, Jan 11, 2012

Given: When I was young I liked to fish when my family went on vacation.

Translation: Cuando era joven me gustaba pescar cuando mi familia iba de vacaciones.

Reasons:

  1. I used imperfect ser because that is the tense you use when talking about age so I presume that also includes vague statements about age such as "when I was young".
  2. Imperfect gustar and ir because I'm talking about something that was habitually done and not a one off and done occurrence.

New Sentence: When I was 6 years old my parents bought me a puppy for my birthday.

hollyjollybe, this game is TOUGH!!! But it's good when we find out the corrections! - hlanier, Jan 10, 2012
I would use "me gustaba," as it refers to when you were a child. We don't know for how long you "liked" to fish. - BradyLabuda, Jan 10, 2012
Good try Holly, in a lot of cases you can try thinking about the preterite as a one off action - did you like fishing once only? No? then go for the imperfect :) If you are describing something in the past that was habitual (like going away) - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 11, 2012
rather than a one off trip the imperfect is the way to go. Another tip is that if you could also say 'used to' or 'would' and you keep your original meaning then use the imperfect. :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 11, 2012
Okay. Thank you Kiwi, and I apologize for being so thick... don't know why this is giving me such a hard time! Guess I'll just have to keep at it until I get it! :) - hollyjollyberry, Jan 11, 2012
We need to fix the tense of "ir" at the end. You wrote in future (irán), but it needs to be in the imperfect. - Gekkosan, Jan 11, 2012
Oops, silly mistake... it was very early in the morning here when I did that and I guess I was not fully awake. :) - hollyjollyberry, Jan 11, 2012
Better. Cuando mi familia iba de vacaciones. Familia is singular. - Gekkosan, Jan 11, 2012
You're not thick at all Holly, this is a very hard subject! It will take a lot of practice so keep up the good work :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 11, 2012
