What is the difference between "por", "par" and "para", and when should each be used?

This is something you'll spend a great deal of time getting the hang of. The best way I ever had it explained was that Para is most often, very literally, FOR as in doing something FOR something else. Whereas, Por generally expresses "by the way of" or "through"...

But, that doesn't change the fact that they will both translate to "for" sometimes. A good habit to get into is to start thinking about the very technical differences in what "for" really means when we use it. That will start helping you discern when to use para/por.

Hope this helps!
