The meaning of dar pie a is to give cause for.

I´m giving you some examples as follows, then you can understand its meaning in a context.

His surprising face gave me cause for asking if he already knew it.

The relaxing book launch, gave cause for a lot of anecdotes.

The comment gave cause for talking about how important is to start well a story in order to capture the reader´s interest.

The previous backstage to the photographic sitting gave cause for a video that shows the preparations of the model and the photo session she did.

Pie

dar pie a alguien para que haga algo -> to give somebody cause to do something

Sounds more like "animar".
