I am a newcomer to Spanishdict
I guess that's what I am. I'm not entirely sure what the main idea of this site is... just translation?
And how does the reputation system work?

Many people know this website when trying to find out a Spanish dictionary.
About reputation, the maximum allowed per day number is 200 reputation. When you vote for one answer, one of 11 first votes will let you have 1 reputation; otherwise, you don't have any. Each answer you vote will let the person who answers have 10 reputation. The accepted answer =20 reputation.
I'm happy you have decided to join! As you can see, we are a pretty friendly community of learners here. Heidi's link to the Member Rights and Obligations is extremely helpful, and I also made a little video last year when we launched a lot of new features that gives you a little tour of our favorite site.
We've also just launched a community phrasebook where you can add phrases, compound words, idioms, technical jargon, etc.

The idea is a community of Spanish learners. If someone wants to learn Spanish, there are several resources available here. The forum is sort of where we all touch base in our quest to learn, either through the lessons offered here or by some other means.
There are many folks here that are from various countries and fluent in español. One can usually get one's questions answered here on the forum, and also receive some encouragement or some other such needed thing.
One climbs the reputation ladder by participating in the forum and having their posts voted upon by the others. You can advance a maximum of 200 points per day, so someone with a lot of reputation points has been here awhile. I'm living proof that a high reputation doesn't equate to a lot of smarts but it's one way to know that I've put in some time here and didn't just join the site yesterday.
I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say, "Bienvenido al foro."
Just translation? As the commercial says: "There's an app for that!" The true value in this site, unheralded as it may be, is the encouragement! The support is great, too. I tell folks that I came for the flashcards but stayed for the chuckles. But really, its the encouragement.
But another side of it is that the Spanish speakers out there get to expand and enhance their English. If you stick around, you will see repeated requests for proper English. I have learned that you can get away with some shortcuts and LOL seems to be okay, but for the most part: use "caps shift" sparingly and punctuate.

Welcome to SpanishDict!!! This is a great site- I have found it really useful for learning, practicing and translating Spanish- and hope you will too. I would highly recommend you have a look at the "learn spanish" section- there are some great lessons there, from begginer to advanced.
They are all very Helpful here.
So the answer thing is basically just the forums, right? And the flashcards... that's self-explanatory.
Don't forget about the ability to double-click on any word in the site for an instant translation! That is probably my favorite feature (though it is hard to choose between so many excellent features). :-D

Click learn Spanish for Spanish lessons. This answer forum is for questions about Spanish or about this website. Some people post games and funny pictures. There is a dictionary that is always at the top for indepth translations and a translator from other websites. There is a refrence section for grammar questions, a phrasebook, a verb conjugator and much more. Just explore the site and you'll figure it out pretty quickly.
