It's my understanding, and I could be wrong, that "danzar" is "to dance" when you are speaking of professional dancers.

A ella le gusta danzar danzas clásica (classical ballet), danzas española (Spanish dance) y danzas del vientre (belly dance).

I've always heard "bailar" used in everyday conversation between Mexicans.

¿Te gusta bailar? = Do yo like to dance? Vamos a bailar. = Let's dance. ¿Te gusta bailar la cumbia, la salsa, el merengue o la bachata? = Do you like to dance the cumbia, salsa, merengue or bachata?

danzar. (Del fr. ant. dancier, quizá de or. germ.). 1. intr. Dicho de una persona: bailar (? ejecutar movimientos acompasados). U. t. c. tr. Danzar un vals. 2. intr. Dicho de una cosa: Moverse con aceleración, bullendo y saltando. 3. intr. coloq. Mezclarse o introducirse en un negocio. U. más para zaherir a quien interviene en lo que no le toca.

Yo soy de Colombia y allá se usa más bailar, danzar es poco común...

Well, I got "danzar" from a Spanish text published in Madrid by Spanish author so for 100% it's not spanglish. According to my Google results, "danzar" is an artistic way of dancing, eg. ballet. Bailar is a general word for any kind of dancing.

I agree. It's not spanglish and google results are correct. And welcome to the forum, by the way :) - alba3, Mar 9, 2010

danzar sounds like a spanglish word, probably border-speak in mexico. Bailar is the original spanish word for 'to dance'.

Bailar is a verb meaning to dance. See this link.

Danza is a noun meaning dance. See this link

I know you asked about danzar and not danza but I agree that danzar is not a word.

Our dictionary gives this explanation

Danzar

intransitive verb

  1. to dance (bailar); to run about (figurative) (ir de un sitio a otro)
