"sweeping the nation"

Question

Hey guys, I am editing a book right now. The idea is that a certain movement was catching on nationwide in a big way, in other words, "sweeping the nation." This is translated as "barriendo la nacion" which I highly doubt is a valid translation.
Can anyone offer an authentic expression to convey the idea of "sweeping the nation?" fyi, the book will likely be marketed in central america...thx! ME

In our dictionary's entry for sweep, it seems the phrase "hacer furor en todo el país" might suffice for this idea. The entry for furor seems to confirm this, too. But it would be best to await confirmation from natives, which I'm not.

Assuming that you mean "arrasando", no. "arrasar" is "to raze" or "to destroy". "to sweep" means to become very popular. - samdie, Feb 7, 2010
