Both "fui" and "fue" seem to be past tenses of the verbs "ir" and "ser". What is the difference in their use?

The differences are just how you conjugate them...depending on who you're talking about. If you look up the conjugations of each verb, you'll see what I mean.

Ir

Fui = I went

Fue = he/she/it went

Ser

Fui = I was

Fue = he/she/it was

The preterit (or past tense) of both the verbs "ir" (to go), and "ser" (to be), is identical in all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person singular and plural conjugations.

Don't be alarmed or disheartened by this. You will know from the rest of what is said or written (i.e. from the context in which they are used) which of the verbs and which of the meanings is correct.

Best Regards,
