USAGE NOTE
"Whereby" is a special type of adverb known as a pronominal adverb, and its translation into Spanish is determined by the noun it refers to. If said noun is masculine and singular, such as in the example in 1a), the Spanish translation uses 'lo" or "el." However, if the noun "whereby" refers to is plural and/or feminine, this is reflected in the translation. For example, 1b) uses "por las cuales" because it is referring to the feminine plural noun "leyes."
