Santiago estaba perturbado. Jamás había visto a su hijo reaccionar tan violentamente.Santiago was perturbed. He'd never seen his son react in such an aggressive way.
This means that the noun can be masculine or feminine, depending on the gender of person it refers to (e.g. el doctor, la doctora).
