This means that the noun can be masculine or feminine, depending on the gender of person it refers to (e.g. el doctor, la doctora).

Samantha resultó ser la elegida para representar a su clase en la ceremonia.Samantha was the person chosen to represent her class in the ceremony.
4. (religious)
a. the chosen one
La congregación rezaba al elegido.The congregation prayed to the chosen one.
A plural noun indicates that there is more than one person, place, thing, or idea.

b. the chosen few
