b. unbelieving
Predicaba la importancia de llevar la palabra de Dios a los pueblos infieles.He preached the importance of spreading the word of God to the unbelieving peoples.
This means that the noun can be masculine or feminine, depending on the gender of person it refers to (e.g. el doctor, la doctora).

a. infidel
Combatió como cruzado contra los infieles.He fought as a crusader against the infidel.
b. unbeliever
Muchos cristianos e infieles por igual murieron en las guerras santas.Many Christians and unbelievers died in the holy wars.
