c. wretched (life)
Nunca conoció el amor en su patética e infeliz existencia.Never in his pathetic, wretched existence did he know love.
2. (failed)
a. unhappy
Tras varios infelices intentos por convertirse en actriz, acabó dedicándose a la enseñanza.After several unhappy attempts at becoming an actress, she ended up teaching.
This means that the noun can be masculine or feminine, depending on the gender of person it refers to (e.g. el doctor, la doctora).
3. (ill-fated person)
a. poor wretch
Toda la familia perdió la vida en el tornado. - ¡Pobres infelices!The whole family lost their lives in the tornado. - Poor wretches!
b. poor devil
Hace lo que puede pero las cosas nunca le salen bien a la pobre infeliz.She does what she can but things never work out for the poor devil.
