Debajo del balcón sobresaliente del edificio, hay una fuente.There is a fountain beneath the projecting balcony of the building.
b. overhanging
Hay una paloma sentada sobre la estatua sobresaliente del palacio.There's a dove sitting on the overhanging statue of the palace.
A masculine noun is used with masculine articles and adjectives (e.g. el hombre guapo, el sol amarillo).
3. (education)
a. outstanding
Recibí un sobresaliente en mi ensayo final.I got an outstanding on my final paper.
b. A
Tengo que ganar un sobresaliente en este proyecto para pasar el año.I have to get an A on this project in order to pass the class.
This means that the noun can be masculine or feminine, depending on the gender of person it refers to (e.g. el doctor, la doctora).
4. (theater)
a. understudy
El actor que hacía de Romeo estaba enfermo y el sobresaliente lo reemplazó.The actor playing Romeo was ill, so the understudy stepped in.
