Usage note
The plural of “gay” can be “gay” or “gais.”
An adjective is a word that describes a noun (e.g. the big dog).
1. (related to homosexuality)
a. gay
Martín conoció a su novio Diego en un bar gay.Martin met his boyfriend Diego at a gay bar.
This means that the noun can be masculine or feminine, depending on the gender of person it refers to (e.g. el doctor, la doctora).
2. (homosexual person)
a. gay man (masculine)
Los miembros del movimiento fascista atacaron a inmigrantes, gitanos y gais.The members of the fascist movement attacked immigrants, gypsies, and gay men.
b. gay (masculine)
Los gais por todo el mundo luchan para que se legalice el casamiento entre parejas del mismo sexo.Gays around the world are fighting for the legalization of same-sex marriage.
c. lesbian (feminine)
Micaela me contó que muchas gais creen que es muy atractiva.Micaela told me that many lesbians find her very attractive.
d. gay woman (feminine)
Muchas gais estuvieron casadas con un hombre.Many gay women were once married to men.
