Usage note
Feminine nouns that begin with a stressed "a-" or "ha-" sound in Spanish use the definite article "el" in the singular.
A feminine noun is almost always used with feminine articles and adjectives (e.g. la mujer bonita, la luna llena).

Las aves que pasaron volando sobre mi casa se dirigían al sur para pasar el invierno.The birds that flew over my house were heading south for the winter.
A plural noun indicates that there is more than one person, place, thing, or idea.

Prefiero las aves a la carne roja o el cerdo.I prefer poultry to red meat or pork.
b. game birds (hunted)
Este restaurante está especializado en aves como el faisán o la perdiz.This restaurant specializes in game birds such as pheasant or partridge.
