An intransitive verb phrase is a phrase that combines a verb with a preposition or other particle and does not require a direct object (e.g. Everybody please stand up.).
a. to put out the fire
Llegaron los bomberos y apagaron el incendio en menos de diez minutos.The firefighters arrived and put out the fire in less than ten minutes.
b. to extinguish the fire
Para apagar el incendio que arrasaba el bosque, tuvieron que utilizar diez aviones.They had to use ten planes in order to extinguish the fire that was devastating the forest.
