A suffix is an affix that is added to the end of a word to create a new word with a different meaning (e.g. philia, ism).
1. (related to; used with nouns to form adjectives)
a. -ine
El hueso palatino funciona como una caja de resonancia.The palatine bone works as a resonance chamber.
2. (used to form demonyms)
a. -ine
El pueblo argentino eligió un nuevo presidente.The Argentine people elected a new president.
b. -an
Los habitantes de algunos pueblos andinos mastican hojas de coca para evitar el apunamiento.The inhabitants of some Andean towns chew coca leaves to prevent mountain sickness.
3. (resembling; used with nouns to form adjectives)
a. -ine
No tendrás esos dientes alabastrinos por mucho tiempo si sigues fumando.You won't have those alabastrine teeth for long if you keep smoking.
4. (diminutive)
This refers to an idiomatic word or phrase for which there is no word-for-word translation.

En el nido había tres palominos.There were three young birds in the nest.
