Forming Affirmative Commands

For regular verbs, you will simply use the usted form of the present subjunctive. That means regular -ar verbs end in -e, and regular -er and -ir verbs end in -a.

examples

Encuentre un lugar adecuado.
Find an appropriate place.

Beba mucha agua.
Drink a lot of water.

There are also irregular verbs in the usted command form. Elija, practique, and vaya are some of the irregular verbs that we studied in this lesson. You can learn more about irregular present subjunctive verbs in this article.

Pronoun Placement in Affirmative Usted Commands

Pronouns are attached to the end of affirmative commands. If the command form of the verb has more than one syllable, a written accent is added when attaching a pronoun.

examples

Llévelo siempre a clase.
Always bring it to class.

Póngase ropa cómoda.
Always put on comfortable clothing.

Forming Negative Commands

To form a negative command, all you have to do is put a negative word such as noin front of the affirmative usted command.

examples

No respire rápidamente.
Don't breathe quickly.

No practique cualquier tipo de yoga.
Don't practice just any type of yoga.

Pronoun Placement in Negative Usted Commands

Pronouns come between the negative word (such as no) and the verb in negative usted commands.

examples

No se mueva sin pensar.
Don't move without thinking.

No se ponga ropa incómoda.
Don't put on uncomfortable clothes.
