Desde octubre de 2002 Fitzgerald era presidente del Consejo pontifico para el diálogo interreligioso, dicasterio donde había sido secretario desde diciembre de 1991.	Fitzgerald was president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue since October 2002, a department of which he had been Secretary since December 1991.
