Ala-pivot''?

As an Angelino, I, of course, have now been reading Spanish articles about our new star, Pau Gasol, from Barcelona who is an International Baloncesto jugador (or is it jugador Baloncesto'), a Basketball player.
...but I can't get a translation for "ala-pivot" (that's with the accent over the i). It obviously refers to Pau as a player or leader or star. And it occurs in several different articles about him, not just one paper or writer.

My American friends who speak Mexican and Central American Spanish don't have an idea about what it means either. It lost something traveling over the Atlantic Ocean.

If you look in the upper right corner of this page, it will list all of the positions in Spanish. When you click on the postion, it will open the link to that position and translate it into English.

Gracias...but why ala and why pivot? Why not some reference to centro or to delantero as in futbol? Isn't ala a reference to wings? (That would certainly apply to Gasol, whose arms are MUY largo.)
Ultimately some phrases just aren't tranlatable, but this one seems like there should be some more concrete meaning or reference.
