Spanish failure analysis reference material translation
I am translating reference material on semiconductor failure analysis into Spanish for my company, and I would appreciate if anyone would be able to proofread the following:
The definition of failure analysis is "a set of precise measurements and tests used to determine the root cause of failure so that a corrective action plan can be implemented to prevent the failure from occurring again in the future." As product lifetimes continue to decrease, it has become ever more important that the analysis be completed quickly in order to implement corrective action. More and more analysis work is shifting away from field return analysis and toward yield analysis, because that's where the impact is the greatest.
Before we cover the basic process flows, let's review some working definitions. Failure analysis is the analysis of fully assembled products. Yield analysis is synonymous with wafer level analysis and refers to the analysis of partial or finished wafer with the intent to uncover information that will improve the number of working dice. The failure mode is the electrical signature that the component exhibits in its failing condition. This should not be confused with failure mechanism, which refers to the condition or event responsible for the failure of the component.

A question I have is, "un plan de acción correctivo" or "un plan de acción correctiva"?
I may think that 'the plan' includes some corrective actions not only one. In any case, it seems (googling) that 'acción correctiva' is a technical term and it must be used like that.
If we were talking about 'plan de contingencia', e.g. 'plan de contigencia informático' I would use 'informático' and not 'informática'.
In the mean time, (as I gathered from your translation) would you recommend that I include the English term, then the simplified definition in Spanish?
Hi AliciaC,
I think that sometimes we come across some English technical terms or simply words that don't have Spanish equivalents, some of them are the same in Spanish, e.g. cache or proxy (computers), I mean terms that is better not to translate. When such terms are not well known it would be convenient to use the English technical terms with the Spanish explanation between parenthesis or have a list of definitions or a technical glossary. My previous question was thinking on giving you a better answer. Please correct my English. Thank you,
My comments are made to the exclusion of the technical vocabulary. That is not my strong point.
Pablo's translation seems very good, as well. It sticks closer to the construction of the original, if that is important to you.
Lazarus's translation is more succinct, and as such, simpler, which may be better for your particular audience. However, this can lend itself to the loss of some subtle nuances or to deviation from the way workers are used to hearing things worded.
Both are well done, and more than I would have wanted to tackle not being "on the clock."
In the quoted sentence below, why would "evitar" be in the subjunctive "evite"? And do I need to use "para que" in that phrase to clarify?
I would say that adding "para" here would mess it up. Then you need another subject for the subordinate clause, as it is not clear who the implied subject would be.
I'm not answering for Lazarus here, but since we're on the subject, this subordinate clause expressing purpose which is future and whose fulfillment is uncertain, requires the subjunctive.
A question I have is, "un plan de acción correctivo" or "un plan de acción correctiva"? Is it a "corrective plan of action" or a "plan of corrective action"? I don't know how this is best expressed in Spanish, but in English the latter option is the more precise meaning. Many times you see the term "corrective action"; I have never seen the expression "corrective plan." I think it should be "un plan de acción correctiva", unless the former is the proper term in Spanish.
No, I simply used your translation as a reference to improve my own skills. Don't worry, you aren't doing my job for me. I greatly appreciate the help, however!

This has definitely been a challenge for me, but I can tell that even since I started this project, my Spanish has improved-- so I suppose that's the best way to learn.
AliciaC, I wonder if the translation is your product per se or a means for doing your work. I only tried to give an understandable translation, not a professional one.
Pablo-- Thank you very much for the references! It would be wonderful if anyone knows of a reference or database online where I can find the Spanish equivalent of these terms. I have posted on WordReference's Spanish forum since they appear to have an entire area dedicated to IT/electronics. In the mean time, (as I gathered from your translation) would you recommend that I include the English term, then the simplified definition in Spanish?

Lazarus-- thank you very much for the comments and grammar correction. I greatly appreciate the help! I understand the rest of the corrections (simple oversights on my part) but I did have one question. In the quoted sentence below, why would "evitar" be in the subjunctive "evite"? And do I need to use "para que" in that phrase to clarify?

¡Muchísimas gracias! I am greatly in your debt.
I hope this helps too:

I didn't dare to translate 'field return analysis' and other specialized terms. I would be really good if you are able to find specialized references in Spanish in order to know the equivalent terminology.
AliciaC,

Before we cover the basic process flows, let's review some working definitions. Failure analysis is the analysis of fully assembled products. Yield analysis is synonymous with wafer level analysis and refers to the analysis of partial or finished wafer with the intent to uncover information that will improve the number of working dice. The failure mode is the electrical signature that the component exhibits in its failing condition. This should not be confused with failure mechanism, which refers to the condition or event responsible for the failure of the component.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semiconductor_device_fabrication ("The proportion of devices on the wafer found to perform properly is referred to as the yield.")
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_(integrated_circuit) ("dice" is not "dados", "Die is a small block of semiconducting material, on which a given functional circuit is fabricated."
I think Wikipedia would help you for sure! In a small degree, your translation work reminds me about my very early days of my English learning. I get started practically from scratch, trying to understand a technical manual of MS-DOS and self-learning about computers at the same time, many years ago. Good luck with your next translations.

Dice'''? I am not familiar with that idiom. It doesn't work in Spanish.
Cubrimos = we cover (=we put a lid or similar over something to protect it)
Generic subjects in Spanish (unlike in English) require an article. You can't say "Análisis de fallos...", if this is the subject.
There are still a few technical terms that I am not sure about, but the grammar appears to be right now, at least.

Don't take the whole thing yet. I need to re-read it a couple of times first.
