Is it appropriate for friends to call each other viejo? I hear that often.

Also used to refer to your parents in colloquial terms. "Mi/tu viejo" = My/your father; "mi/tu vieja" = my/your mother.

It got me written up on a job after someone complained; I had called a guy that when just joking. The guy did not think it was a joke.

Hi Rick, that's odd, viejo is certainly no insult unless you say vieja to a woman of course, jeje LOL

Viejo is not so often used in Spain, but I hear it is used in Mexico as a friendly term, like dude or hey man....

Sometimes it is also used between couples, mi viejo, mi vieja are the corresponding couples, in this case, vieja is actually a term of endearment, not an insult, Rick.

depende del contexto y del país. Generalmente "viejo" se usa entre adolecentes amigos

How old are your friends and how close are they? Are you sure that you heard it correctly? I can think of a similar sounding word that my ex used to refer to me as quite often (not a term of endearment).
