In the background...en el fondo o al fondo....

In the background...en el fondo o al fondo....

Buenas días,
I need some help with my wording of background or in the background. Example:
The man is in the car and the store is in the background.
El hombre está en el carro y la tienda está al fondo.

Is this correct? The only expression I know for background is el fondo or al fondo. I was specifically looking for a descriptive of photos or pictures. So I was trying to use the word as something is in the back of the picture or in the background. An airplane, a mountain, a house anything. I was not using it related to a persons heritage, education, experience etc... Thanks for any help.

I disagree: "al fondo" means "towards the bottom/back" or "at the end"; if the background is right at rearmost of the picture, then it is fine, but not otherwise. When you refer to the background in general, it is "de fondo" or "en segundo plano". Alternatively, you can say "detrás" (behind).
