Your Spanish sounds like a word for word translation of English, but since I'm not a native I leave the syntax suggestions to them. I just wish to make suggestions about your last sentence. When you create a series it's preferable to use similar elements in the series.
1) If creating a series of nouns it would be better to use all single word nouns rather than a mixture of single word nouns and noun clauses or gerunds. Alternately, you could have used two gerunds rather than two simple nouns.
2) Spanish uses the verb infinitive as the gerund not the present participle as we do in English. escatimarlos, rather than escatimandolos, It's a little confusing since the present participle in Spanish is called el gerundio, but it is not a noun as an English gerund is.
3) you should repeat the por with all elements of the series. por el escatimarlos (el escatimar de los') y por el reciclaje de
4) esos** que** utilizo.
The reason that I called these suggestions is that we commonly violate these rules in English usage (especially the repetition of** by** [through] in the series. We also often omit the "that" in English usage where Spanish requires it. These "faults" in English usage are why word for word translations from English to Spanish are rarely correct.
I believe why escatimandolos y reciclaje sounded correct to you is that their English translations would both be gerunds and we wouldn't have any conflict.
