In deference to
¡Hola a todos! Estoy haciendo mi tarea de traducción de Cs. Sociales y me encuentro con la suiguiente frase:
"In deference to his mother, he entered a normal school"
Mi pregunta es acerca de la traducción de in deference to. Sé que existe la posibilidad de "por deferencia hacia", pero estaba intentado encontrar otras posibilidades. ¿Sería siguiendo los pasos de su madre una traducción demasiado tenue? Creo que sí, ¿no? Quizá sólo deba dejar el paralelismo léxico que existe en español y ya.

Although this isn't part of your question, make sure you understand what normal school means. In the US, it is defined as follows. "Although it may imply so, a normal school is actually not for average students. A normal school, also known as a teachers' college, is a school that trains teachers, generally for the primary, or elementary, grades. The name was developed from French to indicate that a normal school was intended to be a model. Most likely it developed from a lesser known definition of the word normal: conforming with, adhering to, or constituting a norm, standard, pattern, level, or type."
The first thing that occurred to me was "conformandose a los deseos de su madre". I'm not sure if it's better or, simply, different. "in deference to" suggests that he might well have preferred to do something else but he suppressed his own desires in order to please his mother. It's unclear to me whether "según los deseos de su madre" means simply that this is what his mother wanted him to do or if it also carries the sense of "despite his own wishes".
